With nearly 500 employees in Ii, unused office furniture such as desks, chairs and cabinets take up a lot of expensive storage space and may inadvertently cause a fire safety risk when stored in hallways and corners.
Since spring 2019, the municipal employment services and the “Tuunataan työtä” project have already mapped the condition of nearly 1,000 unnecessary movables. According to Veli-Pekka Korhonen, project designer for the “Tuunataan työtä” project, the idea comes from the city of Turku, where furniture and material recycling and maintenance have succeeded in rationalizing new purchases.
Due to the large volume of furniture and the scattered warehouses, Ii municipal units have not yet had sufficient information on good furniture and materials, which has easily led to the purchase of a new one. The problem has been solved by setting up a central warehouse for furniture, which is run by the municipal employment services. For example, table legs have been recovered from furniture that can’t be renovated, for example, for other renovation projects.
The Municipality of Ii purchasing manual is updated so that the units primarily look at the supply on the website before placing any new order. Savings costs can be used to develop a small incentive carrot for staff. In the future, the recycling site may include, for example, borrowed goods and why not even open a view for use by Ii residents.
